Warning: Scammers Posing as Ohio BMV

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is alerting residents about a phishing scam involving fake text messages claiming to be from the BMV.

Scammers are sending texts to Ohioans stating they have an unpaid traffic ticket and must pay immediately to avoid license suspension. These messages are fraudulent and aim to steal personal or financial information. Similar scams are being reported across the country.

“If you receive one of these texts, do not engage,” said Ohio BMV Registrar Charlie Norman. “Do not click any links—just delete the message. The Ohio BMV will never contact you via text to demand payment or request sensitive information.”

Report scam attempts to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov. If you suspect you've been scammed, contact your local police.

What to Do If You Receive a Scam Text:

  • Do not click any links: These links direct you to fake sites designed to steal your information.

  • Delete the message: Do not respond or interact with the sender.

  • Report it: File a report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

  • Alert your bank or credit card provider: If you clicked a link or entered any details, contact your financial institution immediately to monitor for fraud.
