Vishing Scam Alert: WhatsApp Phone Call Scheme

This scam involves cyber criminals leveraging WhatsApp voice calls in a tactic known as vishing (voice phishing). Victims receive an unexpected call from an unknown number via WhatsApp. Upon answering, a robotic voice instructs the user to add a specific phone number to their WhatsApp contacts, then abruptly ends the call with no further details.

While the call may appear harmless, it is actually a reconnaissance attempt by cyber criminals to assess your willingness to follow unsolicited instructions. If you comply, they may target you in future attacks aimed at hijacking your account—typically by tricking you into revealing your WhatsApp verification code. Once compromised, attackers may use your account for fraudulent activities, extortion, or to scam your contacts.

Protect Yourself from Vishing Attacks:

  • Do not add unknown nrs to your contacts unless you can verify the source.
  • Enable two-step verification in WhatsApp to provide an extra layer of security.
  • Report and block suspicious callers within the app. Your reports help prevent similar scams from spreading.

Stay vigilant and always question unexpected requests.
